It's one of the most lavish days on the Australian horse racing calendar, but the 2016 Caulfield Cup race day in Melbourne showed its slightly less glamorous underbelly on Saturday.
About 30,000 punters descended on the Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne's south east on October 15, dressed in their finest race day garb.
But as the day wore on and the champagne flowed, the scene on the fields turned more garish than glam.

One happy-go-lucky racegoer decided to take her dancing to the table to be seen above the crowds

Wary from the effects of the sun, and arguably too much booze, the crowd appeared to grow more jubilant and carefree as the day went on.
With some maintaining their decorum, others arguably let the excitement of the day get the better of them.
Images captured from Saturday's race day show punters throwing shoes to the wind, passed out on the ground, and even being escorted by security from the event.

When the woman, who was sitting on a camping chair at the time, failed to catch her hopeful friend, the pair toppled over in a fit of laughter onto the ground.

Even with rubbish forming a layer atop the green fields, bleary-eyed punters didn't seem to mind as they took some time out for a power nap after a long day.
While some extended a hand to their friends, others saw more fit to join their mates on the ground, sharing a kiss or two amongst the beer cans and food wrappers.
Most revelers appeared to be in high spirits as the day wore on, but some had a less positive end to the day.
One man was seen surrounded by security guards as they forced him out of the event.
The security guards were later joined by a swarm of police officers to escort the man off-grounds.
