Speaker Karu Jayasuriya conducted special meetings with the chairmen and members of five independent commissions - including the Commission to Investigate Allegations on Bribery or Corruption, yesterday.
The Speaker had held separate meetings with members of CIABOC, Police Commission, National Procurement Commission, Finance Commission and Elections Commission throughout the day.
CIABOC Director General Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasinghe, who tendered her resignation on Monday, attended the meeting.
Commission Chairman T.B. Weerasuriya and the other two members of the Commission were also present.
Sources said the meetings were concentrated on the present issues and performance of the independent commissions.
Thee meetings come in the wake of an outburst by President Maithripala Sirisena’s over the conduct of independent commissions.
The meetings took place at the Parliamentary Complex.
“The present status of performances of the Commissions, the future course of actions and problems and requirements in carrying out their work had been discussed during the meeting,” the Speaker’s media division stated.
The Speaker, who is also the Chairman of the Constitutional Council, issuing a statement on Monday assured the independence of the Commissions stating that neither the President nor the Prime Minister would allow any undue interference to their functions.
