The upfgrading of YASCO Sports Complex is expected to climax in March of 2017.
The Antigua & Barbuda Athletics Association (ABAA) has turned to the Chinese government for assistance with the upgrading of the country’s lone track & field facility, the YASCO Sports Complex.
This is according to President Everton Cornelius who revealed that the body has also written to the International Athletics Foundation (IAF), soliciting financial support for the undertaking.
“That part of it has been done, and I am just waiting to get their response to see exactly what they would give us. As for the government commitment that they would give us $1.6 million for the upgrade of YASCO, that is left for the government now to tell us exactly how we are going to move off where that is concerned,” he said.
“I had a meeting with the Minister [EP Chet Greene], last week, and it was about a submission to go to the Chinese indicating to them that we would like them to construct a track for us, so we can host Carifta Games 2018. I did the necessary documentation and submitted it Monday of this week,” he added.
According to Cornelius, who will contest the post of president when the association’s general elections are held later this year, they have also secured permission from the land owners just south of the YASCO facility to utilise a portion of their property when expanding the track.
